Fish & Bits.
Hi folks,
welcome to the Fish&Bits Blog, a place where we will speak about science regarding behavioural and evolutionary ecology of fishes.
welcome to the Fish&Bits Blog, a place where we will speak about science regarding behavioural and evolutionary ecology of fishes.
More specifically, here at my place we investigate relationships between fish behaviour - mostly reproductive behaviour - and evolution:
- How are behaviours selected ?
- How do they affect the survival and reproductive success of organisms?
- How are they maintained, or transmitted?
- How does enviromental variation, including global change, affect behaviours ?
To try answering these questions, we tend to think a bit, we read, we build experiments, we tinker some models, we travel a little, and finally, we write some scientific papers. And that is an issue: we do all this stuff to write articles in scientific journals that most people will never read or even know about. So let us divulge some of our research, thoughts, ideas in this blog. Ideally, I hope to provide things like:
- Reports on some scientific articles, from us, or from other people we find interesting
- Some thoughts or observations that would not fit into scientific journals
- Some easter eggs or creative stuff.
And to begin, here comes a quizz: below is a picture of two brown trout partners over a redd in a nice river, during the fertilization act. In the back, another individual darts toward them.
What is this individual going to do ?
- Answer A: try to fertilize the female.
- Answer B: eat some eggs.
- Answer C: prevent the fertilization to happen by chasing the male or the female.
- Answer D: try to place other eggs in the redd.
- Answer E: "a pleasant mixture of them all".
mmh, hard to say. I would choose the sneaking one (answer D).
RépondreSupprimerI would guess B - eat some eggs, although A would probably be likely as well.
